FEW H.B. MAORIS REGISTERING FOR SERVICE TRAINING

(Special) NAPIER, March 31. Reports from Gisborne that young Maoris had shown keeness to register for military training have been a surprise to Hawke's Bay officials, who have found that remarkably few Maori youths are coming forward. So poor has been the response that only eight in the area between Wairoa and Hastings have made application since registrations began. They consisted of two from Wairoa, four from Napier and two from the Hastings district. Officials believe two main causes to be the laxity in Maori birth registrations and the fact that many young Maoris exaggerate their ages for the sake of higher wages. It is also considered that some Maoris believe registration is voluntary for them as in wartime, though this is not the case.
