Batsmen On Top In Cricket Match With Wairoa Won By P.B.
j High scoring marked the represen-; tative cricket match played at the Gis-i borne Oval at the week-end between! Wairoa and the Poverty Bay colts side. 1 Batting first. P.B. compiled a total of, 270 for the loss of five wickets before declaring. Wairoa made 106 and 41-5 in the follow-on, the result being a win | on the first innings for the home team i by 104 runs. ! This was Ihe first occasion for 10 years that a Wairoa representative team has played in Gisborne. Several P.B. • batsmen were in runscoring mood, notably G. Elliott and G. Vincent, who carried their bats for 89 and 80 respectively. The best of the remainder were R. Maclnncs (39), T. Riley (28). and B. Brebner (22). C. Hoslop and D. McKenzie took two wickets each and H. M. Croker one.
C. Heslop produced a good variety of strokes in scoring a fine unbeaten 93 in the Wairoa first innings, which was more than half his side’s total of 166. An opening batsman. R. Bauld. hit up 21 to be the second top-scorer. The left-handed slow bowler, T. Gedye, captured five of the Wairoa wickets at a cost of 41 runs and B. Donovan, who with G, Elliott opened the pace attack, took 2-14. In the second knock of the visiting side, E. Gahagan .scored 18 not out, and Donovan claimed three wickets for two runs.
Good conditions favoured play, and at a function after the match the president of the P.B. Cricket Association, Mr. J. A. Crawford-Smith. welcomed the visitors and expressed the wish that the match would- be the fore runner of many more between the teams. Results:— Poverty Bay. First Innings: B.
