MASTER ORELIO WINS FIRST RACE AT MAKARAKA

Third choice on both the win and place machines. Master Orelso put i:i a strons finish to win the Nick's Head Hack Handicap, the open ins: event on the programme of the IMJ. Turf Club's spring meeting at the Makaraka course this morning. The time was good and the winner beat strong rivals in the ton weight Bulos and a well-backed runner, Leighwin.

Conditions for racing have seldom been better than when the meeting opened this morning, tire course being in excellent order after the light ram earlier in the week, and the weather warm enough for comfort not excessively hot. The club’s appointments showed tlie benficts of good maintenance. and organisation of the racing was. as usual, highly efficient.

The substantial fields were handled well at the barrier by Mr. F. C. FMcKay, Napier, and Mr. P. A. Pettit occupied his customary place in the judge’s box. Much interest attached to the outcome of the handicapping, which at recent previous meetings was entrusted to Mr. E. V. W. Wilson. The secretarial control was in the hands of Mr. D. Donald. A Late Start

Some time was lost in getting the Nick's Head handicap field o!T and it was not until a quarter of an hour after the scheduled time that the starter took the field over. He had a little trouble, especially from Peer Gvnt, which eventually got off badly. Earlv leaders were Bulos. Leighwin and Sinatra and they held the front positions around to the home turn with Desert Sand close. Master Orelio was about sixth as thev made the turn, but came on well on the outside, getting up to beat Bulos and Leighwin nicely. Motokn was slow away, but finished well and took fourth position.
