FLYING-BOAT LANDS ON RIVER THAMES
For the first time in 21 years a flying-boat landed on the Thames in London recently. The flying-boat was a Short Solent, the largest type of craft used on the South African route of British Overseas Airways Corporation. Landing on the broad stretch of the river below Tower Bridge it taxied upstream to moorings near Tower Tier. The incident was part of the thirtieth birthday celebrations of British civil aviation, and the flying-boat was christened City of London bv the Lord Mayor. This picture shows the flving-boat at her moorings near Tower Pier. The historic Tower of London dominates the background.
