PORE CLARIFIES DECREE AGAINST COMMUNISM
(10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 4. Speaking in German over the Vatican radio to a Catholic rally at Bochum, the Pope defined the object of the recent Vatican decree on communism as ‘‘drawing a line of division between the Catholic faith and athiest communism.” . , , , The Pope said that the line had been drawn “to erect a dam for the salvation not only of the working people but of everybody with the exception of Godless Marxism.” The decree had nothing to do with the difference between poor and rich or between capitalism and Marxism. The Pope said that the church always stood up for those seeking right or wanting help and it was never opposed to any single social group or class. War had brought one blessing—it had largely equalised class differences He added: “It must not happen that the difference between the owners and those who live by their menial toil is resurrected again and made more acute. The world of working men must not fall prey to Godless materialism.
