MR. PETER CLEARY
OBITUARY
The death occurred on Sunday morning of a much-respected and popular resident of the Tiniroto district, Mr. Peter Cleary, who for the past 13 years had been licensee of the Tiniroto Hotel and in that, capacity had established a reputation for business ability and interest in the affairs of the locality.
Born at Glendowie, Victoria. 63 years ago, Mr. Cleary came to New Zealand as a man in his early twenties, and settled for some years at Auckland. He entered the service of the tramways corporation there and qualified as a motorman. During the First World War he served for two years with the 2nd Otago Rifles in France, being wounded in the face and arm, but later making a full recovery from these injuries. Returning to New Zealand, he took up hotel business, and held the license of the' Albion Hotel. Napier, for seven years, later being in the Victoria Hotel, also in Napier. lie went to Tiniroto 13 years ago, and quickly gained a favourable footing with settlers and the passing public, his service being noted for its good-nature and warmth of welcome. In these qualities it reflected his own character, which was kindly in the extreme, and was not affected by a long period of failing health. Mr. Cleary was married in Wellington to Miss Annie Stock, eldest daughter of Mr. William Stock, a pioneer of the Hawke's Bay district. He is survived by Mrs, Cleary and by one brother, Mr. Frank Cleary, Auckland. The burial is to take place in the Soldiers’ Plot at the Taruheru Cemetery today, following a service at Holy Trinity Church at 2 p.m.
