ST. ANDREW’S P.W.M.U.

Despite wet weather, a good attendance of. members was recorded at the monthly meeting of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union held in St. Andrew’s schoolroom last Tuesday’, when Mrs. J. Hutchin presided.

A Scripture reading was given by Mrs. A. A. Brown. The meeting took the form of “Gleanings by members.” Mrs. Fairbairn read an article by Dr. M. Ryburn in India. "How can I find out God's purpose for me?” It was evident that the only way to find the answer was in the service to others. The peoples of the Punjab were slowly but surely being brought to the knowledge of God's truth. A newsletter on 'Maori Missions” was read by Mrs. J. S. Nugent. In this letter the Rev. Mr. Smith stated that the Maori Mission work is steadily progressing and great results are seen at the David Hogg Memorial Hostel at Whakatane. Miss E. A. Downes, Samoa mission, has been accepted as a mission worker in the Maori field at Waimana.

Mrs. F. Pitcher gave a short account of the itinerary of Sister Tourirow in the Wanganui district, where she has initiated five new branches of the union.

Mrs. Hutchin read a paper on the work of the Y.M.C.A in Japan, emphasising the great opportunity for Christianity there today and the outstanding fact that the Emperor is hearing the Gospel from Kagawa, the great evangelist. s The final article was “John Williams Vl—Mission Ship” read by- Mrs. A. Shaw. This is a trading ship in the Islands, and carries the message of Christianity to everv small island. The various papers were well received and members thoroughly enjoyed this “flashlight” on mission work. During the afternoon Mrs W. Prentice recited a poem “Covenanter's Dream.” an outstanding work made more vivid by the background of a musical trio singing “The Lord is My Shepherd.” Mrs. J. Hutchin presented Mrs. Prentice with a delightful shoulder spray. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Barwick, Evans, Faviour, and Jackson.
