THREE QUESTIONS TO MR. SEMPLE ON RAILWAY CUPS
( P.R.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The seeking of tenders for Britishmade cups for tiie Railways Department in Dunedin, the cause of a protest bv Dunedin wholesale houses, was the subject of three questions of which members gave the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, notice in the House of Representatives this morning. Mr. T. E. Skinner (Govt. Tamakl) asked whether the Minister would inform the House that the action of his department would have no detrimental effect on local cup manufacturers. Mr. C. L. Carr (Govt. Timaru) aslred whether it was still the Government's policy to protect and encourage in. every way New Zealand’s own economic manufacturing industries.
Mr. M. H. Oram (Oppos. Manawatu) asked why in view of the Government protection extended to the crockery manufacturing industry British-made cuds and saucers were specified, and whether arrangements had been made for special import licenses to be issued in respect of that purchase, licenses which were not available to the general public.
