CONSISTENCY OF TOLAGA BAY BOWLERS AT N.Z. CHAMPS.

(Herald Correspondent.) A feature of the report of the Tolaga Bay Bowling Club, to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday, is the reference to the consistent performances of the club’s representative four at the Dominion bowling championships during the past four years. In 1946 the team, comprising Messrs. E. H. Crowley. E. Crowley, V. F. Hurlstone, and G. A. Crowley (skip), played its' way into the last dozen rinks engaged. In the following year, with F. Wilton of the Khandallah club, substituting for E. Crowley in the final stages, the same combination made bowling history by winning against a formidable combination skipped by “Peter” Skoglund, of Otahuhu, in one of the most sensational finals in the annals of the New Zealand championships. In 1948 they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a very close finish, and at this year's fixture in Auckland, with L. Crowley of Otaki forming the third member of that family in the team, they secured fourth position in the championship ladder. Championship Honours

Other honours gained for and in the club during the season included the centre senior singles championship, won by V. F. Hurlstone; runners-up in the East Coast rinks’ tournament at Tokomaru Bay, the rink comprising N. T. Smith, K. E. Smith, V. F. Hurlstone, and E. A. Beer (s); runners-up in the local annual tournament last January by the previous year’s winning rink comprising C. Nelson. E. Harries, C, W. Taylor, and N. B. Smith (s); runnersup in the centre pairs championship. J. H. Meikle and V. F. Hurlstone; club championship singles, V. F. Hurlstone, junior championship singles, H. Nelson; intermediate singles, O. G. James, sen.; championship senior pairs, J. H. Meikle, V. F Hurlstone (s); intermediate pairs, A. Donald, O. G. James, sen. (s); junior pairs L. Lawrence, H. Nelson (s). The report records an increase in membership from 42 to 44 and a satisfactory financial position, the accounts showing a credit balance despite a high expenditure, the principal items being an outlay of £l6 10s 3d for the installing of an additional nest of 12 lockers, and an amount of £l4 10s for new plant. The committee recommends an increase in subscriptions to meet rising costs and the necessity of renewing the entire retaining timber on all sides of the ditches. In conclusion, the report expresses appreciation of the support of all who co-operated in the affairs of the club during the season.
