MR. ROBERTS ELECTED AS PRESIDENT FOR THIRTEENTH YEAR
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 23. Mr. James Roberts, M.L.C., was again elected as president of the New Zealand Labour Party today. He defeated four opponents and increased his majority by 115 votes. Mr. Robers will hold office for his 13th year. Mr Roberts’ nearest competitor was Mr. A. H. Nordmeyer. M.P., last year’s vice-president, who was also runner-up in the presidential vote last year. Miss Mabel Howard, M.P., and Mr. J. Mathison, M.P., polled lightly. . The figures with those for 1948 in parentheses are: Roberts. 468 1387); Nordmeyer, 218 (252); Howard, 26 (did not stand); Mathison. 13 (14). Mr. A. J. McDonald was re-elected as secretary and treasurer. Mr. McDonald polled 674 votes (620 last year) and Mr. K. Boland 53 (68. Mr. A. 11. Nordmeyer was elected as vice-president for the tenth time and he too increased his majority substantially. The voting for the vice-presid-ency with figures in parentheses for those candidates who stood last year was: Nordmeyer, 475 (368): R. F. Barter 101 (124); J. H. Collins 59 (did not stand); P. G. Connolly. 51 (44); Dr. A M. Finlay, 31 (15); Miss Howard, 22 (77); A. E. Waters. 7 (did not stand); J. Mathison, 3 (23).
