SAILORS CLASH WITH REDS IN MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE, May 23. Blows were exchanged at a lively Communist Party meeting on the Yarra River bank, and police intervention was again necessary. A group of about 30 naval ratings and soldiers interjected throughout the meeting and speakers were also heckled by ex-servicemen in other parts of the crowd. Anti-Communists sang the National Anthem and marching songs. In retaliation about 20 Communists crowded on to the platform and sang the “Internationale.” Mounted and foot police broke up the crowd after it had refused to disperse. Then the soldiers and sailors formed ranks and marched to Prince’s Bridge, singing patriotic songs. Later naval patrols dispersed an attempt by about 60 sailors and airmen in uniform to break up a Communist lecture in the Unity Hall.
