FAST UNLOADING OF SHIP BY WATERSIDERS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 8 A new departure in the system of handling cargo on the waterfront occurred with the discharge of the intercolonial vessel Wairata when the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union acted as agents and took full responsibility for stevedoring on the ship.
The union's officials contracted for the job and fully supervised the discharged cargo.
The secretary of the union, Mr. E. A. Napier, said today that the job was finished in 20 working days (counting two Saturday half-days as one working day) instead of an estimated time of about six weeks. The cargo of about 6200 tons of scrap steel from the Pacific wfls a most difficult one to handle.
