WHY WAS ORDER FOR REDUCTION IN TYRE PRICES CANCELLED?

A recent Price Tribunal direction for a reduction in the prices of all tyres was cancelled by the tribunal before the date it was due to become operative. This was stated by Mr. W. A. Sutherland, secretary of the Wellington . Automobile Association, at a meeting of council members of the asscciation. The council resolved to ask the Price Tribunal why the reduction offered in December had been cancelled.

Mr, Sutherland said that, just before Christmas, the tribunal ordered a reduction of 15 per cent, in the price of motor tyres and 7$ per cent, in the price of truck tyres. The order was to come into effect on January 24. Before this date, tyre distributors were informed that the order had been cancelled. The reduction, continued Mr. Sutherland, would have meant to the 200,000 private car owners in New Zealand a saving of more than £1 on each new tyre.
