Caning By Prefects Opposed By Former Principal Of College
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 10. Prefects should not cane other boys at school, as such punishment was likely to .have a detrimental effect on the boy being caned which would go far deeper than any physical pain he might suffer.
This view was expressed yesterday by Mr. F. Martyn Renner, a past headmaster of Rongotai College, commenting on a reported incident at Nelson College. “Being caned by a boy of the same age—and possibly a prefect may be younger—is likely to instil a sense of degradation in a youth and would foster resentment against his school," said Mr. Renner. “When such feelings are aroused seeds are sown for anti-social tendencies later on.”
