NOISY MOTOR-CYCLES

Sir, —May I' congratulate the Borough Council on its decision to take a firm attitude regarding the noisy motorcyclists.

This is a matter that has been long overdue for attention as any longsuffering resident of Te Hapara, on the main road, will testify. I believe that motor-cycles when they come from the dealers are reasonably quiet, but these youths take parts off and insert a crowbar to make a clear passage for the hideous din to which we are subjected. A point I have noticed is that the smaller the machine the more the noise. Is it an inferiority complex that causes the owner of a smaller machine to do this?

There has been a rumour circulating lately that the Transport Department had a scheme under way for dealing with these offenders. Did this have any effect on the council's decision to take action first? Motor trucks also are offenders, but I will say that they do not come home from dances, etc., in the early hours of the morning and they are at least doing some useful work for the community. MOTHER OF FIVE.
