After 19 years’ association with the control of traffic, Mr. R. Metcalfe, who for the past 11 years has been enforcement officer of the Transport Department in Gisborne, has tendered nis resignation to take effect early in April. The last major function at which he will exercise authority over traffic will be the P.B. Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s autumn Show, on April 2. His first appointment as a traffic officer was secured in 1930, when he was appointed by the Te Awamutu Borough Council from among 44 applicants. In 1932 he was an applicant for a vacancy in the Waikato traffic group, -organised by combined local authorities there, and was selected from among 235 applicants. Four years later he received an appointment with the Transport Department, and he came to Gisborne in 1937. Since that year he has been associated with this district, and his mileage on official business now runs close to 400,000 miles.

Mr. Metcalfe intends to make his home in Gisborne, where during his 11 years’ work for the department he has made many friends. He will be succeeded by Mr. J. Boyle, now stationed as inspector at Matamata.
