DEFENCE ASSAILS RUSSIAN’S BOOK AS ANTI-SOVIET
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Co r>y right.) (10 a.m.) PARIS, Mar. 7. France’s leading atomic scientist, Professor Frederick JoliotCurie, gave evidence for the defence today in the libel suit by Victor Kravchenko, who claims authorship of “I Chose Freedom,” against the Communist weekly l',es Lettres Franeaises.
Professor Joliot-Curie told the court he was a member of the Communist paper and said he had worked in scientific laboratories during several visits to the Soviet Union. He said that Kravchenko’s book had been written to satisfy personal hatred and to create an atmosphere favourable to war against the Soviet Union. The defence submitted a written statement by Mr. D. N. Pritt K.C., a British Member of Parliament, calling Kravchenko a traitor and describing his book as “typical anti-Soviet propaganda.”
An American lawyer’s statement read to the court said that Kravchenko left the United States for France under the false name of Paul Kedrin and, on the basis of a sworn statement of identity, this was illegal under the United States immigration laws and normally anyone leaving the country would not be allowed to return-
