Three armed white men took a negro prisoner from the gaol at the Lonsiana town of Opelousas yesterday and tossed a coin to see who would kill him. The negro, Edward Honeycut, aged 22, who had been held in gaol for four months on a charge of raping a married white woman, escaped when the coin was tossed. lie dived into a river and swam to safety. Later he gave himself up to the police in another town.
The sheriff said the assailants had kidnapped Honeyeut from the third floor of a supposedly “mob proof” gaol by threatening the gaoler.
