Death of Mr. Arthur C. Hughes

Mr. A. C. Hughes, “Pakihikura,” Whakaaniangi, whose death occurred at his residence on Sunday morning, was a resident of long standing in the Whakaangiangi district. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Hughes, now residing at Ikanui road, Hastings.

Upon the retirement of his parents from active farming some years ago, Mr. Hughes took over ‘‘Pakihikura.’ He married Miss Eva Bedford and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. He is also survived by his brothers Messrs. David, Russell, Jack, Fred, Robert, Tilson, Noel and Kenneth, and his four sisters, Mrs. Grace Evans, Whakatane; Mrs. May Freer, Meeanee, Napier; Mrs. Uli Martin, Auckland; and Mrs Kowhai Treacher. He was educated at Kings College, Auckland. The interment took place at Te Araroa on Monday. Tribal Committee Elections

Tribal committee elections will take place at Purferuku and Tutua maraes during the coming week. The work of the tribal committees in promoting the social welfare of the Maori people and in organising the provision of sports facilities and public amenities is becoming an important feature here, and it is expected that local interest in the election of strong committees will be very considerable. Teachers Meet

A large contingent of district teachers travelled to Te Puia on Saturday to attend the annual meeting of the Waiapu branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The meeting was well attended, the teachers being the guests of Miss Corrie-Johnstone for the day.

The retiring president, Mr. J. A. Taylor was elected delegate to the tute’s annual meeting to be held in Wellington in May.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr. K. D. Henderson, Wai-o-Matatini; vice-presidents, Mr. K. JBates, Rangitukia, and Mr. J. A. Taylor, Te Araroa: secretary, Mr. L. G. Harris, Whakaangiangi; management committee, Messrs. W. L. S. Britton, J. O. MeCabe and L. Biggs, Miss A. CorrieJohnstone. and Mrs. L. H. Sparks; auditor, Mr. N. T. Lovegrove. Visiting Te Araroa during tlje week, Dr. Francis, Napier, called at the school to address secondary scholars on the subject of tuberculosis. He gave an instructive lecture on the incidence, causes and treatment of the disease, and illustrated his address by displaying Xray plates. He was accompanied by Nurse-Inspector Blackwood and District Nurse I. Banks. Personal Notes Constable R. Godfrey and Mrs. Godfrey have returned to Te Araroa after a vacation spent in Palmerston North and Wellington.—Mesdames E. Clarke, H. E. Fraser and P. J. Taylor and Mr. J C. O’Regan have returned to their homes after a brief visit to Gisborne.— Mrs. L. Halliwell, Napier, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. Murtagh, Tokata. Dr. J. L. Simcock and Mrs. Simcock left Te Araroa early in the week for Opotiki, where they will reside permanently.—Mr. Harry Murtagh has returned to Napier after spending a vacation with his parents at Tokata. Miss Hester Fraser, “Hinekura, Whakaangiangi, is residing at Wamgake.
