MRS. A. M. HAWKINS DIES SUDDENLY

The death occurred suddenly on Sunday in Wairoa of Mrs. Alice Magdalene Hawkins, at the age of 43 years. Mrs. Hawkins appeared to be in good health early in the evening, but later suffered a seizure and passed away at midnight. Born in Wairoa. Mrs. Hawkins reared a family of eight children. She was an ardent worker in the cause of Maori Catholicity and played a prominent part in many activities in aid of the church. She possessed a host of friends. Mr. R. Satherly is acting postmaster at Wairoa during the absence of Mr. J. McKinnon on annual leave.

Gun dog trials were held at The 'Heads, Wairoa. on Sunday, the following being the results: Open Land, M. Williams. 1; J. Maroney, 2. Puppy, Land. Master J. O'Connor, 1; A. Craig, 2. Open water: M. Williams, 1; W. A. Mitchell, 2.

Playing cricket in Wairoa over the week-end, the Wairoa County Club defeated the Poverty Bay Club on the first innings by 140 runs to 100. The top score was registered by Barker, Wairoa, 46. Playing in the champion fours bowling competition in Wairoa, J. Cook, W. Crarer. H. Cook and H. Roberts, by winning all games qualified to compete in Gisborne shortly in the champion of champion fours. :

At Easter in Wairoa the first Maori Catholic Clubs’ conference to take place here will be held. Over 1000 delegates from all parts of the North Island are expected to attend and a very attractive programme has been arranged.

The Watkins rowing fours were commenced on the Wairoa River last weekend, when Glass defeated Karauria by a length. Later Pert defeated Smith and Glass accounted for Johansen, j Glass and Pert will meet in the final.
