GUN DOGS HAVE FIRST PRACTISE TRIAL OF THE SEASON

Fine weather prevailed for the open ing practice trial of the season conducted on the outskirts of Darton Field by the Gisborne Gun Dog Club during the week-end

Plenty of rough cover afforded the dogs an excellent opportunity for a brisk work-out and, aided by a strong cross wind, some very fine performances were credited to both dogs and handlers.

In the pointer and setter section, the dogs held the interest of the onlookers and some staunch points were witnessed before the birds were finally flushed. The winner in this event was the English setter Kentucky Blue, owned by Vic Davy. He was closely followed by N Kennedy’s pointer Ayr Laddie, and Mr. Kennedy, senior’s, pointer bitch filled third position. A wide varietv of gun dogs was entered in the open event of the day. A number of the spirited younger dogs seen in action should more Ilian hold their own as they develop further age and experience. This event resulted in a win for V. Davy’s cocker spaniel, Awapuni Pride. Mr. A. G. Willis’ Irish water spaniel, Monty of Thunderhill. was second, and M ,). Cook's English soringer spaniel, Grainbelt Premium, third.

The concluding event, the puppy heel retrieve, resulted in a win for IT. Boddington's Labrador dog, Te ITapara Troubndor. and a good display put Miss Houston's golden retriever, Gisborne Heron, in second place. Following afternoon tea, the vicepresident. Mr. Leo Davy, awarded certificates to the owners of the placed dogs. He also thanked the judges, Messrs D. Scandrett and D. V. Davy, and the club captain, Mr. A. G. Willis, upon his efficient handling of the trial Best wishes for their success was tendered to the owners, comprising the team proceeding to Napier next weekend, to compete in the Hawke's Bay gun dog championships.
