FINES ON DUNEDIN BOOKMAKERS TOTAL £4OO

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Mar. 8. Fines totalling £4OO were imposed on two men for bookmaking when they pleaded guilty before Mr. J. D. Willis, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Vernon Henry Jones was fined £250 and Roy Jeffrey McKeigh £l5O- - Detective T. V. Hall said it was found that Jones had taken £56 in betting when his home was visited at 11.50 a.m. on February 26. He had been previously convicted for the same offence. Jones had acted in defiance of an intimation given by the court when he was convicted in 1945. Mr- Willis said: “I intend to inflict heavy penalties on those who come back.” One month’s hard labour was fixed in default of immediate payment.
