BIG GORSE FIRE NEAR WELLINGTON: 3 HOUSES SAVED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 7. One of the largest gorse fires in the area for years swept the hills on the eastern side of the mouth of of the Hutt Valley yesterday. The fire, which was first noticed about 9.20 a.m., burnt about 100 acres of gorse and scrub before it was brought under control nearly eight hours later.
It swept from a point at the back of some houses about 100 yards from the southern end of Gracefield road to Point Howard and over the hill to Lowry Bay. Three houses, one on the main Eastbourne road and two on the top of the Point Howard spur, were narrowly saved from the flames.
Four brigades—Eastbourne, Day’s Bay, Point Howard and Lower Hutt — attended the fire . Although the blaze was outside the area tended by the Lower Hutt brigade, two engines and men of the brigade fought the lire all day.
Through the strenuous efforts of the firemen property damage was confined to a small amount of native bush, and a few pine trees.
