French Communist Deputy Loses His House Immunity
) PARIS, Mar. 5. The'' National Assembly voted by 303 votes to 202 votes to lift the Parliamentary immunity of the Communist deputy, Mr. Roger Garaudy, says the Associated Press correspondent. The Government asked for this step as a preliminary to a prosecution against Garaudy for defamationThe alleged offences go back to 1944 and concern tracts bearing Garaudy s name attacking the then Premier, M. Robert Schuman, and calling him ‘‘the gauleiter of the dollar.” Ilie Assembly, by 296 to 221 votes, refused to lift the immunity of the Communist leader. M. Marcel Cachin, who is the nominal director of the newspaper l’Humanite.
