FIRST INNINGS WINS IN H.S. COMPETITION

First innings decisions were obtained in both games played in the High School cricket competition on Saturday afternoon. Roderick’s side defeating O’Rourke’s and Norman’s defeating Haultain’s.

After gaining a lead of three runs on the first - innings scores, Roderick’s team, scoring rapidly, declared with 82 runs on for two wickets and attempted to force an outright win in the last stage of the day, a move which was, however, not successful. Good batting performances were put on for the winners by Sweeny, 52, Green, 23, Ngaira 20, and Tennent, 14. Roderick, with three wickets for no runs, was their most successful bowler. For the losers, Whaitiri 13 runs, and Richardson 10, batted well, while Stewart headed the bowling with three wickets for 10 runs. In the other game Haultain’s side, batting first, compiled 69 runs (Parsons 20, Harries 15) against steady bowling in which Norman, with five wickets for 28 runs, and Boggs, three for 13, figured prominently. Norman’s side, mustering 103 runs, gained the decision, Preston 39 runs. Rice 21, and ,Kennedy 10, being the main contributors.
