STATE LOSES OVER £2,000,000 TAXATION ANNUALLY

The illegal bookmakers, on their own admission, handle more than £24,000,000 annually in off-course betting; a larger amount than is invested on all legal totalisators on racecourses. Last year the Totalisator and Dividend Tax yielded £2,177,236. This tax is deducted from all Totalisator investments before dividends are declared. But no such tax is derived at present from the illegal bookmakers. The vast sum involved goes into their pockets and still they will not pay full totalisator odds. Since off-course betting is inevitable, the issue at the Poll is simply whether it is to be controlled in a decent legal manner or continued to be driven underground to illegal channels. For the good of the country vote “For the Proposal.” (ißsued by N.Z. Racing & Trotting Conference)
