MISS N. BROOM WINS ONE-MILE RIVER RACE
Fifteen competitors left the Roebuck road bridge on Saturday in the annual river race of one mile conducted by the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club. Miss N. Broom with a handicap of 3mm. 52sec„ was first past the finishing line at the Trafalgar band rotunda. She swam the distance in 29min. 28 2-ssec., good time for the distance, which was swum at high tide. The back-marker of the four women competitors taking part, Miss Broom established an early lead and was 50yds. ahead of A. Johnson and B. Preston, who were close together second and third. The scratch man, H. Holmes, who was giving awav lOmin. to the first starter, was placed fifth. In presenting the Stoneham Cup to Miss Broom, the club captain, Mr. T. Sheahan, congratulated her on her excellent race and her. convincing win over the other competitors. The race resulted:—Miss N. Broom (handicap 3min. 52sec.), 1; A. Johnson (3min. 36sec.), 2; B.
