Pickpocket Convicted Of Stealing Wallets
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Mar. 4. “He is a sort of pickpocket who wants a sitting shot.” This comment was made by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., today when John William Gower, aged 19, driver, was before the Police Court on three charges of stealing wallets, with valuable contents. He pleaded guilty. The police stated that a wallet containing a diamond ring worth £45 was stolen from the coat pocket of an employee of a city firm. Constable Jack Sherwin interviewed Gower, who had delivered goods to the firm the same day. Accused denied all knowledge of the wallet. He had a repair slip for a watch and the constable’s inquiries at a jeweller's shop showed that he had left the stolen diamond ring for remodelling. Gower later admitted the theft of two other wallets containing £26 and notes and stamps worth £lO respectively.
Defending counsel, in appealing for leniency, said that Gower had been spending too much money on a girl. The magistrate called for a report by the probation officer and remanded the accused in custody, for sentence on Monday.
