Reynolds Hall, Tolaga Bay, was the venue of a very successful function on Thursday evening, when the annual ball of the Tolaga Bay Sheep-dog Trial Club was held in conjunction with a public farewell and presentation to Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Smith on the eve of their departure for Dannevirke, where Mr- Smith is taking oyer the position of manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Limited, after serving in a similar capacity for four years at the Bank's Tolaga Bay branch. The hall, with the stage tastefully decorated with large bunches of hydrangeas, was packed with a throng of happy dancers, with the many beautiful evening frocks of the ladies forming a kaleidoscopic coloured pattern off-set by the more sombre male attire. On the arrival of the principal guests of the evening, Miss Marjorie Thornton, captain of the Tolaga Bay Ladies’ Golf Club, presented a spray of red lilies and maidenhair fern to Mrs. Smith, who had been an active member of the club. Dever. president of the Tolaga Bay Sheep-dog Trial Club, in making a presentation of a cheque to Mr. Smith on behalf of that club, referred to the esteem in which the recipient was held, not only in his capacity as auditor for the club, but also as a businessman, and expressed the deep regret felt at his impending departureMr. H. R. Irving, chairman of the Uawa County Council, in presenting Mr. Smith with a substantial cheque on behalf of the residents of Tolaga Bay and district, expressed the very deep regret felt by all sections of the community over Mr. Smith’s impending departure. “Mr. Smith by his never-failing courtesy, tactfulness, and personality, combined with his capacity and ready willingness to assist, nad created a very favourable impression with all who came in contact with him. and had created a large circle of friends,” said Mr. IrvingThe speaker then introduced the other guests of the evening, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Condell (the former being appointed as successor to Mr. Smith), and Dr. B. E- W. Aldwell, who has been appointed by the Department of Health as medical practitioner for Tolaga Bay. “As president of the Tolaga Bay Bowling Club, and a member of the committee of the Tolaga Bay Coif Club," said Mr. L. G. Watson, “I am very pleased to have the honour of paying tribute to Mr. Smith, not only on account of his proficiency as a bowler and his keenness as a golfer, but also in his capacity as manager of the Tolaga Bay branch of the Union Bank of Australia, wherein he had given faithful service to his employers and earned the friendship and undying esteem of his clients, and the deep respect of all who came in contact with him." Mr. Watson congratulated Mr. Smith on his promotion to the managership of one of the Umon Bank’s largest branches, and wished him and Mrs. Smith every happiness in their new sphere.
