India’s “Anxious Interst”: Peace Settlement Talks
(10 a.m.) NEW DELHI, Feb. 28. Representatives of Britain, India and Australia met in New Delhi today for informal talks about the unrest in Burma. The Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, presided. Among the representatives who attended were' Mr. Malcolm Macdonald, Special Commissioner in South-East Asia, Dr. H. V. Evatt, Australian Minister of External Affairs, and Mr. A. Bottomley, British Minister for Overseas Trade who is holding trade talks with the Government of India.
India is very concerned about the Burma situation.
A communique announcing the conference said that the Government had followed with “anxious interest” recent developments in Burma, where it feels that apart from the wide issues involved, the export of rice may be affected.”
After today’s conference the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a communique, saying: “The _ informal conference on the situation in Burma unanimously decided to address a joint communication to the Prime Minister of Burma, Mr. Thakin Nu, wherein certain suggestions have been made for exploring ways and means for finding a peaceful settlement.”
