STOWAWAY SENT TO GAOL FOR TWO MONTHS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Feb. 10. Two stowaways who were arrested on the arrival of the Aorangi were before the Police Court yesterday. Peter Charles Joseph Milgate, aged 18, an Australian timber worker, admitted stowing away at Sydney on December 22. The police said he was not allowed to land at Vancouver. There were no statutory provisions under which he could be deported to Australia. Milgate told the magistrate that if given time he could obtain money from his parents for his fare home. Milgate was accordingly remanded for a w^eek. Charles Frederick Ellis, aged 23, a ship’s steward, pleaded guilty to stowing away at Auckland and also admitted a charge of deserting the Rangitata.
The police said he was brought back from Vancouver at a cost of £lO7. Ellis was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be cumulative.
