First N.Z.-Built Ship
Arrangements are being made by Mr. V. H. Reed for the reservation of the site at Paihia, Bay of Islands, op which the Herald, said to be the firs* ship built in New Zealand, was constructed. The site, which is on the foreshore at the southern end of the Piahia beach, is marked by a small stone. The Herald, a 60-ton schooner, was built by the Church Missionary Society and launched in 1826. In thu two years before the boat was wreck ed on the Hokianga bar, it had an ad venturous career in New Zealand waters. The men most closely associated with the building of the vessel were the pioneer missionaries. Henri and William Williams. Their descend' ants, who have already given the fine stone church at Pahia, are to buy thif site and present it to the GovernmeD 1 as a national trust.
