BACK-MARKER LEADS AT FINISH OF SURF RACE OFF WAIKANAE
Eleven competitors provided another interesting quarter-mile race off Waikanae Beach during the week-end in the series conducted by the Surf Section of the Gisborne Amateur Swimming Club for the de Costa Cup and one of the back-markers, B. McLean, came through in the concluding stages to gain the decision. Though generally calm, the sea rose in occasional combers to produce surf conditions. Results follow. Time, 6min. 52 An' invitation has been extended to the representatives of the Maranui and Lyall Bay clubs to take part in a display which it is proposed to arrange at Waikanae Beach at the latter end of February, it being suggested that the Wellington teams make a stop at Gisborne on the return journey from the Dominion surf life-saving championships being held at Waihi. If the invitation is accepted it is hoped that the visitors, besides taking part in an afternoon display, will compete at an evening swimming carnival at the Macrae Baths-
