LIAISON OFFICIALS FOR ALL BLACKS DURING TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA
The appointment of two men who will share the duty of acting as liaison officer between the New Zealand Rugby touring team and the South African Rugby Board next year is mentioned in a letter received by Mr. S. S. Dean from Mr. Bill Schreiner, who was chairman of the South African selection committee for 2G years. The men appointed are Messrs. B. O. Wintle and Bassett. The former will take the first half of the tour and Mr. Bassett the second half. “They are both very fine fellows and will fit in well with the team,’’ writes Mr. Schreiner. Commenting on the itinerary, Mr. Schreiner wrote that it was adopted after some heated discussions. In his opinion it did not involve a heavy programme. Other information received from South Africa by Mr. Dean concerns a conference of referees which is to be held at Pretoria next year at the time of the Springbok trials. The aim of the conference will be to obtain uniformity among referees who will control matches played by the All Blacks. Touring teams which have visited South Africa in the past have commented upon the greater consistency of referees in that country than in other Rugby-playing countries.
