Merino Clip Sets N.Z. Record Price At Dunedin Sale

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 21. A new record price for New Zealand greasy wool was established at the first main fleece sale of the season in Dunedin yesterday, when a local mill paid 81|d per lb. for three bales of super combing Merino sold by Malvern Downs, Central Otago.

This eclipsed the previous record of 81 d for a Marlborough Merino clip at Christchurch last Wednesday. The selection in Dunedin yesterday was mostly of a good style, with large entries of hogget wools and ewe clips, mostly shorn before lambing. Generally the wool opened up particularly well, there being almost an entire absence of dust, only very few bales from Central and North Otago showing slight signs. Most of the better-class fine clips came from Central Otago, with some exceptionally good lines of crossbred from the south. Local Mills Secure Fine Wool

The local mills were always in the market for better lines of fine wools and obtained most of these, although they had strong competition from other sources, mostly Continental. Bradford was fairly quiet. The maximum total of 30,000 bales, all new season’s wool, was offered. There were no passings and the Joint Organisation did not come into any part of the sale. In spite of the recently-altered exchange rate, values were better than any of the peak prices secured last year. There was a keen demand for all classes of wool and values appreciated from 3d to 6d per lb. on those of last season. There was a full bench of buyers, but the buying appeared to be restricted to a few. The official report issued by the Dunedin Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Disposal Commission, states that the first main sale was held yesterday when more than 30,000 bales of new season’s greasy wool was offered and every lot was sold. Condition Above Average The quality of the wool, in general, was above the average and opened up in excellent condition. The Merino clips forward were of super style and quality. Halfbred clips were mainly in line with the Merinos, being well grown and sound. A fair proportion of the catalogue comprised spring-shorn clips. The Continent were most active, the official report continues, but Bradford took lots which were suitable to their needs. Local mills competed freely for choice lots of fine wools and the resultant keen bidding established a new record for the Dominion. French sections took a major share of the skirtings. A noticeable feature, the official report concludes, was the excellent style and quality of the hogget wools generally, especially from the southern districts and these wools were very keenly sought after.
