Australia’s New Citizenship Ceremony

CANBERRA (By Air Mail)

A special ceremony will be held in future when aliens receive their naturalisation certificates.

In announcing this innovation, which follows the United States pattern, Mr. A. A. Calwell, Minister for Immigration, told the House of Representatives recently that the State Premiers had agreed'to a Commonwealth request that a proper procedure should be established for the ceremony. He said it was hoped that the Australian flag would be given pride of place, and that special addresses would be delivered.

“The Commonwealth wants the ceremony to be a memorable occasion,” added the Minister, “not only for the new citizen, but one which his wife and children will always recall as part of the process whereby they became part of what we believe to be the greatest nation in the world.” Mr. Calwell was speaking during the committee stages of the Nationality and Citizenship Bill, which provides for the creation of an Australian citizenship, which will be held simultaneously with British nationality.
