Sinking of the Turakina Recalled.
In an itrmressive ceremony at Friendly Bay, Oamaru, a memorial was unveiled to the late Captain J. B. Laird, master of the Turakina, which was sunk by a German raider in the Tasman Sea early in the war, and 35 members of his ship’s company who were killed in action against the raider. Sheepskin Control
“The sheepskin control regulations are the weakest set-up we have got, and the sooner we get away from this control the better,” said Mr. P. S. Plummer, chairman of the meat and wool section of Hawke’s Bay Federated Farmers, at the meeting in Hastings last week, when advice was received that no finality had been reached in regard to the efforts of Federated Farmers to induce the Government to remove these controls.
Shortage of Labour The school had a long list of position* in shops and offices which _ were_ unfilled and it seemed that this position would not improve for eight or more years 'aid the rector of Timaru Boys High School. Mr. M. A. Bull, at the break-up ceremony. "While one feets very sorry for the small employer who is unable to secure the assistance he needs, the matter is rather different with public and private bodies who employ a lot of labour,” said Mr. Bull. “It has been obvious for a decade that the present situation would arise, so one can feel little sympathy with the majority of such organisations, which could have easily avoided their present difficulties had their employment policies not been short-sighted and selfish.”
