MINISTER IMPRESSED BY SOUTHLAND
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 17. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. EL. Cullen, met the Southland Progress League yesterday, when the needs of the province were placed before him by the president, Mr. A. W. Jones, and other members of the league. Mr. Cullen said that many of the matters presented were the concern of other Ministers, but he would forward them with a personal recommendation. During his three days’ visit, Mr. Cullen said he had seen much of Southland. He was impressed -with the cleanliness of the farms, with the methods of top-dressing, the manner in which seeds are grown, the quality of the sheep and the type of fencing on the farms.
Southland offered a greater area for development than any other part of New Zealand, he added.
Concerning the free railage of lime, Mr. Cullen said that his department was preparing a scheme, together with producer committees, and it was hoped to have some decision soon. He stressed the need for more fertiliser works throughout the country. The installation of new freezing works in Southland was under serious consideration, but he had no statement to make at present.
