REPARATION WORK AFTER FLOODS:
COMPLETION NEAR “Most of the flood-damage repair work is now completed, but the provision of adequate breast-works where river erosion is taking place will take some time to complete,” stated Mr. K. F. Jones, engineer to the Cook County Council, reporting to the monthly meeting held yesterday. The engineer stated that weather conditions since the last meeting of the council in late November had been extremely good, and excellent progress had been made with county works in the interval. Patching and sealing work on main highways, and in conjunction with the Works Department extensive sealing work would be undertaken during the season. Work on the reconstruction of the main highway between Patutahi and Ngatapa would be delayed until power and telegraph poles were shifted clear of the new alignment. Meagre Allocation “Every effort is being made to expedite the sum of expenditure available from Government grants,” the report stated. It is suggested that further representations be made to the Minister of Works with regard to the meagre allocation made to the council from Government grants. /. The Hangaroa-Waikaremoana road was still showing the effects of flooding rather badly, but a start had been made on maintenance gravelling from the Hangaroa bridge to the Barns-Graham. junction. The engineer reported on the purchase of a grader from the Hawke’s Bay County Council at £3OO, following an inspection in company with a _ member of the council, Mr. L. C. C. Field, and the council’s mechanic. It was hoped to have the new Austin-Western grader machine available at an early date.. Good progress was being made at the Patutahi quarry in the production of metal chips, but as the demand was extremely high it was probable that there would be some hold-ups in sealing work for the season.
