HOSPITAL FARM CONTEMPLATES A CHANGE IN BREED

Owing to the fact that no land adjoining the Cook Hospital farm could bo acquired, consideration is being given to other steps to ensure an all-thc-ycar-round milk supply. In a report adopted by the board yesterday, the chairman of the farm committee, Hr. 11. Cooper, said that the endeavour was to increase production and it was considered that the establishing of a straight herd of the Friesian strain would bring about the desired result. The principal of Massey Agricultural College had been requested to give advice and information concerning the average butterfat and solid tests of the strain under both winter and summer conditions.

Mr. Cooper reported that he had made a tentative arrangement with a local firm concerning the purchase of a stud Friesian bull from the South Island at a value of 90gns. Although the report from Massey College was still awaited, it was decided to leave the matter to the committee chairman with power to act.. The November statement of the farm committee showed an excess of £404 of income over expenditure. Sales to the Gisborne Milk Producers’ Association amounted to £2GB. sales to dairy companies £sl, sales to the Pig Marketing Association £46 and tiro provision of 15 baconers valued at £9O supplied to the hospital. Wages involved £77 of the total expenditure of £96.
