COMING AND GOING Mrs. P. F. Barker, “Glenroy,” and Miss Annette Barker returned home on Tuesday from Auckland. Mrs. Humphrey Bayly, Nuhaka, was a visitor to Hawke's Bay at the beginning of the week. Mrs. Brett Gray, “Wniohika," has been the guest of Mrs. E. J. Stock, Stafford street.

Mrs. H. T. Holden, “Himinui,” has returned home after a visit to Hawke's Bay.

Hamilton left today to visit their daughter, Mrs. W. Blathwayt, who is now living in Masterton.

WAIHIRERE PICNIC The Knox Young Wives and Mothers’ Club picnic at Waihirere on Saturday proved an outstanding success, both for parents and children. Running races, swimming, a picnic lunch and the distribution of ice-cream and sweets all helped to make the day enjoyable. Fairbairn in the Sunday School hall.

Presentations for the best scholars went to George Lowe and Audrey King. The school, which has been open for about three months, is conducted by Misses L. Carruthers and A. Flockhart and Mr. W- Taylor. VICARAGE GARDEN PARTY Shady trees in the grounds of tho Vicarage in Cobdcn street provided an ideal background for the garden party held on Tuesday afternoon by the Waiapu Archdeaconry Group of the Mothers’ Union in honour of the Rt. Rev. N. A. Lesser, Bishop of Waiapu, and Mrs. Lesser. The latter, who was making her first visit to Gisborne, is the president of the Mothers’ Union in the Waiapu Diocese.

A charming feature of the garden party was the presentation by each group in the archdeaconry of a ready-packed food parcel for dispatch to England, to Mrs. Lesser, to mark the occasion of her first visit. In addition, Mrs. W. E. GofTe, on behalf of the Holy Trinity Mothers’ Union, presented her with an iced Christmas cake made by a member, Mrs. H. Hankey. Mrs. Lesser warmly returned thanks for the gifts. She was also given a bouquet from the archdeaconry group, as was Mrs. Williams, wife of the late Bishop Williams, of Waiapu, while Mrs. Hall received flowers from the Mothers' Union.

Group dancing on the lawn by pupils of Miss Maureen Keaney and afternoon tea provided pleasant interludes. A service at Holy Trinity Church had preceded the garden party and there the bishop addressed the congregation. ' '

CHRISTMAS PARTY A fitting conclusion to the year's activities of the Social Club for the Blind was a Christmas party held at the residence of Miss W. Lysnar, on Saturday, when a large gathering of members and their friends joined in the festivities, A gaily decorated tree was loaded with gifts of chocolates from the Blind Institute of Auckland for blind folk in Gisborne, and these were duly distributed. The tree, decorated by Mrs. F. Forgo, was much admired. Mr. W. Keith spoke on the work of Rotarinns in connection with the blind of the district and brought Christmas messages from Rotary members.

Mr. F. Forge, president, introduced Mr. R. F. Gambrill. who spoke on his travels abroad, to the great interest of his listeners. Miss Lysnar. assisted by Miss Green, served afternoon ten and an effectively iced Christmas cake, donated by Mr. S. Bardswell, was cut by Mesdames Forge and Elliott. Ice cream was also dispensed. A musical programme Included:— Vocal solos. Mesdames Nolan. Wood and Morrow, Mr. J. Butler: violin solos, Mrs. G. Moore and Bernard Price: harmonica items, Mr. S. Bardswell: vocal duets, Mesdames I. Morrow and M. Wood.

Carol singing concluded the bright programme.

BRIDE-TO-BE

Pre-wedding parties for Miss Ruth Sutherland commenced recently when Mesdames W. Purcell and E. Craill gave a “pantry-recipe" evening at the home of Mrs. Purcell in Centennial Crescent. Miss Sutherland wore a blue frock with a scalloped peplum and hemline, outlined in wine satin-stitching, and was accompanied by her future bridesmaid, Miss P. Muir, who assisted with the unwrapping of the gifts. Competitions were won by Miss R. Sutcliffe and Miss Muir. Gladioli decorated the room. Mrs. Purcell was in a black and floral ensemble and Mrs. Craill had chosen a turkey red frock with black bows.

Another party was a "miscellaneous” afternoon given by Mrs. J. Sutcliffe and Miss R. Sutcliffe at their home in Clifford street. There, gladioli and Iceland poppies formed a decorative background for the gathering. Miss Sutherland, who wore a whitepatterned green suit, with a short, flared jacket, won one of the competitions and Mrs. W. Ellis won anotherMusic was provided by Miss Sutcliffe, at the piano. She was in a blue linen suit with a white blouse and Mrs. Sutcliffe favoured a dark line green suit with a pleated skirt.

Miss Muir assisted the bride-elect to open the gifts from her friends.
