Stern Gang Chief Denies Share In Bernadette Murder
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright.) (11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. Nathan Friedmann Yeliin, the Stern Gang leader, denied in court today that he had anything to do with Count Bernadotte’s assassination, says the British United Press correspondent in Acre.
Yeliin said: “When I heard about the murder it never even occurred to me that the Stern Gang might be blamed." Yeliin and Matityaho Schmuelevitz are being tried by a special military tribunal on charges of having carried out terrorist activities after the British withdrawal from Palestine. Yeliin added: “Our fight was directed only against the British. When the last British soldier left, there was no one left to fight.” Yeliin wore a smart grey suit in the witness-box. In one lapel he had a badge showing a hand with two fingers raised on oath —the Stern Gang badge.
