EXCHANGE RATE FOR BERLIN MARKS
(10.45 a.m.) BERLIN, Dec. 14. The Soviet zone authorities have announced for the first time an exchange rate between Western and Eastern marks, says Reuter's correspondent in Berlin. The rate for a limited sum is 125 Western marks for 100 Eastern marks. The exchange rate has been fixed on the basis of the wholesale price indices in the Western and Soviet zones, the Soviet Zone Economic Commission stated.
Few travellers are expected to take advantage of this rate since one West mark will buy nearly four East marks at licensed exchange booths in Western Berlin, The black market rate in the Soviet zone is reported to be even higher.
