HEAVY FINES FOR THEFTS OF PAPER BEARING STAMPS

(P.A-) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 15. Four men, whose names were suppressed appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for sentence for the theft of waste paper bearing postage stamps, the property of the Railway Department. The magistrate said he would fine the accused in proportion to the profit they had made, but would take into consideration the extra labour and work done in (heir spare time to take the stamps off the paper and to treat them. Tlie accused making the biggest profit, approximately £l7O, was fined £4O on each of two charges and costs on four other charges. Another was lined £35 on each of two charges and costs on four others. A third was lined £22 and £2O on each of two charges with costs on four.

The fourth was fined £3O and costs on three charges. The magistrate said lie could not understand the stamps going in ns waste paper when they could be so easily rendered valueless by having a hole punched through them. In view of the fact that this was the first, case of its kind he would suppress the names.
