BIG NEW BRITISH LINER BEGINS MAIDEN VOYAGE THIS MONTH
The new 28,164-ton Orient liner Orcades, which completed her sea trials last month, will begin her maiden voyage to Australia this month, according to advice received in Gisborne. She will leave London with 1560 passengers on December 16 and arrive at Fremantle, her first port of call, on January 5. The new liner is distinguished by her yacht-like lines which mask her great size. Other- features of her construction are the central grouping of her funnel, bridge and mast, and the liberal provision of deck space free of obstructions. She was built at the VickersArmstrong yards, Barrow-in-Furness, at a cost of over £3,200,000. She is the first British passenger liner designed solely for carrying passengers to be completed since the end of the war. Reaching a speed of 24.7 knots on her trials, the Orcades is powered by six steam turbines driving twin screws. She is 680 ft. overall, with a beam of 90ft., and draws about 35ft. Her name commemorates another Orcades, which was torpedoed off West Africa in October, 1942, while serving as a troopship
