EXCLUSIVE USE OF RESERVE FOR CRICKET NOT FAVOURED

After discussing a proposition that the P.B. Cricket Association be granted a lease of the Childers Road Reserve for a term of 21 years, with the right of renewal, the reserves committee of the Gisborne Borough Council was unable to make a favourable recommendation.

At last night's meeting of the council, the committee's report, which was adopted, stated that the association could be granted the right to play cricket on the reserve without having the exclusive use thereof, on the condition that the association prepares the wickets required. The association had requested the council to assist in endeavours to cater for cricketers, by laying down on the reserve three turf wickets. The reticulation of the area so that water would be available for the preparation of the wickets and the maintenance of the ground surface, out-buildings and surroundings were also requested of the council. Preparation of the wickets for play was to be the responsibility of the cricket association, which proposed to pay the council.a rental of 10/- per week for the period October 1 to March 31 each year. The reserve was the only ground in a central position available for general purposes and if the association were granted-the exclusive use of it other organisations would be prevented from using it during the summer months, stated the report.
