SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. J. H. HARNESS
Although he had not been in the best of health for the past few months, the sudden death yesterday at his residence, Perry street, of Mr. John Henry Harkess, came as a shock to his many friends.
Born at Lyttelton 64 years ago, Mr. Harkess served his time at the painting and decorating trade. He came to Gisborne as a young man and married Miss Margaret Jane McLenaghan at the age of 24. Mr. Harkess carried on his trade at Gisborne for many years and was wellliked and respected by all with whom he came in contact.
Keenly interested in sports of all kinds, Mr. Harkess for many years was a member of the Kahutia Bowling Club. He was particularly interested in Rugby. Mr. Harkess was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club.
He is survived by his wife; erne son, Mr. B. Harkess, Gisborne; and three daughters, Mesdames P. Dudley and F. Graham, and Miss G. Harkess, all of Gisborne. There are also six grandchildren. A service is to be held in Cochrane’s chapel. Williams street, at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the funeral leaving for the Teruheru cemetery.
