IMPROVED AMENITIES IN COUNTY AREAS URGED BY CHAIRMAN
WAIROA, Dec. 15
The hope that in future more money? from indirect taxation would be made available to local bodies for administration was expressed by the re-elected chairman of the Wairoa County Council, Mr. A. T. Carroll, at the annual meeting yesterday. No one, said Mr. Carroll, could say that county councils throughout New Zealand were not entitled to a little more. He advocated a percentage up to twice that at present operating, sc that up to £SOOO could be made avail able for county roads. He hoped that in the near future a policy of local government would be moulded with adequate provision for alleviating the position of the man on the land.
“It is essential that some of the town amenities be extended to the counties; otherwise the population drift to the cities will continue,” he continued. “If conditions are suitable, activities and movements of population will be balanced.
“With other members of the council I feel that saturation point for rating is being approached,” added Mr. Carroll."
