MILLER STARS DUO BEATEN IN CHALLENGE MATCH AT PATUTAHI

In ideal weather conditions spectators at the Patutahi Lawn Tennis Club’s courts saw a spirited tussle for the Miller Stars, in which the holders, S. and G. Robb, wore defeated by two highly promising players from Kia Ora Club, in D. Gray and T. Coutts, Results were:—

Singles.—D. Gray, scr., defeated SRobb, scr., 13-11; T. Coutts, scr., d. G. Robb, o„ 15-3, 9-4. Doubles. —Gray and Coutts, scr., d. Robb and Robb, scr., 9-5. The junior player, Gray, who does not reach 18 years until January, is playing exceedingly well at present, and is ranked eighth on the Poverty Bay-East Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s provisional list of leading players. Unless he suffers a relapse of form he should do well in inter-club and championship play during the season and go on to better things with more experience. So far he has been successful in all his matches this season.

The next challenge for the Miller Stars will be played early in the New Year, with Mangapapa as the challengers.

During the coming week-end it is hoped to play off the following matches to determine rankings in the Poverty Bay-East Coast association’s list:—M Waititi, Kuatoria, v. B. Jenkinson, Gisborne; D. Gray, Kia Ora, v. D. Cranswick, Gisborne; R. Watts, Metropolitan, v. R, Smaill, Gisborne; J. Burns, Manga papa, v . B. Jenkinson; M. Waititi v. D. Cranswick; M. Waititi v- D Richardson. Gisborne: Mrs. R, Hutchinson, Gisborne, v. Miss M. Haisman, Gisborne; Miss Cox, Gisborne, v. Mrs, Bell-Syer, Gisborne. Players named above are asked to arrange their own meetings, and to complete the series of matches before December 19. Matches should be controlled by umpires and the results forwarded to the association secretary. A challenge match for the H. B. Williams Shield, recently won by the Mangapapa Club from Tolaga Bay, is scheduled for Saturday next, December 18, the challengers comprising a B team from Gisborne club.
