DOMINION ECONOMIST AS F.A.O. DIRECTOR

(P.A.)

AUCKLAND, Dee. 13

Dr. H. Belshaw, former professor of economics at Auckland University, is to become director of the Rural Welfare Division of the Food and Agricultural Organisation in Washington, U.S.A. He arrived by Sky master today after attending a conference at Lapstone, N.S.W., of the Economic Commission for Asia.

‘‘From GO to 80 per cent of the population of the Far East is engaged in agricultural work on low standards of living and nutrition,” Dr. Belshaw said. "Consequently the F.A.O. is vitally concerned with promoting reconstruction, especially if production and consumption of food are still below pre-war levels.

“My main task was to promote wherever possible co operation with the commission from this viewpoint. The conference was very successful."

Dr. Belshaw returns to America by air on Friday.
